For me, as a Mum, mornings are a blur of to do list and trying to be caffeinated. Time seems to slip away from me no matter how early I start the day. I get up, dress the kid, give her breakfast, let the dog out, empty the dishwasher, fill the dishwasher (does anyone ever have an empty dishwasher?). Then it’s time to do laundry, walk the dog, make lunch, nap time and BOOM! It’s midday. What?! So, I make my Banana Breakfast Smoothie to start the day.
To combat these mornings, I use a 3 drink system. I don’t have time to prepare breakfast for myself or even sit down to eat it. I’m rubbish at ‘prepare-the-night-before breakfasts’ because I’m too knackered and can’t be bothered. As a compromise, I just reach for a bar of chocolate in the morning to keep me going. This only makes me feel worse in the long run.
3 Drink System for a Productive Morning
My 3 drink system is like this: big bottle of water, coffee and my Banana Breakfast Smoothie. Apparently, it’s healthy to drink water (who knew?) and since doing this I have noticed a big difference in my energy levels and my skin. I drink a huge bottle of water in the morning but I won’t lie to you: sometimes it’s squash, sometimes it’s with ice and lemon, sometimes it’s plain. The thing is, I hate having things the same way everyday. I have to mix things up depending on how I’m feeling so I just can’t have the same things at the same time every day.
Then I have coffee – duh! Usually a latte with some for of syrup in it. I know it’s not the healthiest but it’s my treat for getting out of bed in the morning. It also caffeinates me so I can be a functioning human being rather than allowing the demonic succubus take over (it doesn’t get rid of her just buries her a little deeper ).
Banana Breakfast Smoothie
Finally, I have my Banana Breakfast Smoothie. Bananas contain quite a bit of magnesium which is something I lack in. Magnesium is a very important nutrient when it comes to supporting your immune system. The last thing I need is to be trying to balance this act I call ‘Motherhood’ while having the snuffles. It also contains oats (slow releasing energy to keep you energised and feeling full throughout the day), almond milk (you can use any milk you like), cinnamon (because I’m a cinnamon worshipper) and maple syrup (optional, but yummy).
Bung it all in a blender and press the button. This is the blender I use. It is perfect for smoothies and soups. I used this to puree meals for my baby while she was weaning and it did a good job! It also turns into a bottle. So whatever you blend up in the blender, you can remove the blade attachment and put on a bottle top to just take it on the go! Less washing up!
These 3 drinks ensure I am hydrated, caffeinated and kept full throughout my morning. The best thing is that because they’re drinks, I can drink them as I’m rushing around in the mornings or take them on my morning walk (obviously not all at the same time). So here is my life-saving, morning-rush Breakfast Banana Smoothie.
Breakfast Banana Smoothie
- Food Blender
- 1 banana frozen
- 300 ml milk (I use almond milk)
- 1/3 cup rolled oats
- 1 tsp cinnamon ground
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- Put all of the ingredients into a blender.
- Feel free to add more or not so much of anything depending on your taste. I personally throw loads of cinnamon in!
- Pulse the mixture until the banana has been broken up and then mix on medium/high until smooth.
- Pour into a glass, mason jar or to-go cup and enjoy!
Obviously, I don’t stick to this everyday. Sometimes I want scones for breakfast or a big fat fry-up and I let myself have it. Life is too short to not enjoy the things you want.
