July is Cody’s birthday month and this year he turns 4! Every year for his birthday, he gets pupcakes and a new toy. A pupcake is a cupcake made for dogs using dog-safe ingredients. We usually buy Cody’s birthday pupcake from a local baker but I thought this year I would have a stab at making them myself! They were a lot easier than I thought (and also I didn’t mind if I messed them up or if they weren’t perfect because I own a beagle – HE’LL EAT IT!).

And he did.

You can make these for your pooch too, with this step-by-step recipe! This recipe makes between 9-11 pupcakes so maybe you could have a mini party for your pup and invite all their furry friends to join!

Please make sure you are using peanut butter that is dog friendly! I use this one because it only has one ingredient: Peanuts!

I also used Snoopy and Charlie Brown cupcake cases because Cody is a Beagle and when would be a better time to use them? You will see they are topped with gravy bones and kibble because they are Cody’s favourite treats!

For the Pupcakes…

  • 2 carrots grated
  • 1 ripe banana mashed
  • 1 egg
  • 130 g wholemeal flour
  • 40 g rolled oats
  • 5 tbsp peanut butter dog-safe
  • 4 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp honey

For the Icing…

  • 500 g soft cream cheese
  • 6 tbsp peanut butter dog safe

For the Pupcakes…

  • Preheat your oven to 160°C (150°C fan) and line a muffin tray with muffin cases.
  • Mash together the grated carrot and banana with a fork in a large bowl.
  • Mix in the rest of the cake ingredients with a spoon until well combined.
  • Spoon evenly into your muffin cases and put in the preheated oven to bake for 15-18 minutes.
  • Once cooked through, remove from the oven and leave to cool on a wire rack.

For the Icing…

  • Using a hand mixer or standalone mixer, whisk the cream cheese and peanut butter together until fluffy.
  • Decant into a piping bag and snip the end of the piping bag off so you have a hole with a circumference about the size of a 5p or 10p.
  • Pipe swirls of icing on your cooled pupcakes and top with your pooch's favourite bite-sized treat or kibble.

Obviously, Cody was my assistant while making these and, yes, I did let him lick the spoon..

And the bowl…

It is his birthday after all.

Of course, make sure you take off the paper case before giving it to your dog. I tried to get a good shot of Cody eating his pupcake but being a beagle, he wolfed it down in one go like a seagull with a battered sausage.

Something a bit different for our newest recipe this Thursday but I hope you enjoyed it nonetheless!
